From 140-character tweets to 14,000-word print books, most content marketers now understand the value of producing content of varying lengths and format. But those that try to churn out equally high volumes of content at every length will soon find themselves collapsing from sheer exhaustion. Enter the Content Marketing Pyramid, a framework which I first blogged about in 2010. Some have compared this content model to the old model of the food pyramid, and there are a few similarities. Both pyramids stress the importance of creating a strong foundation and building on that foundation with segments that are consumed (or created) at increasingly smaller intervals….

Christopher Chris Benoit’s insight:

There’s been a lot of negative stuff in the press so far about how Yahoo is making a big blunder with its recent acquisition of Tumblr.

In this article, I’ll explain why I think they’re all wrong.

But first, let’s address the critics, who in general, seem to be focused on two main points:

There are a lot of summer jobs out there, find out what’s available, how much it costs and what skills you need.

Christopher Chris Benoit’s insight:

That first summer job is often a rite of passage for many teens. It’s the signal that you’re on your way to adulthood, and it’s also a method for earning money to pay for activities, interests or to stash away for post-secondary schooling. However, the type of summer job any teen opts for should be based upon his or her current and desired skillsets and on his or her ultimate career goals, thus proving that it’s never too early to start considering the future.

Don’t waste an opportunity — be sure to ask these questions during your next job interview to help determine whether the position is the right fit for you.

Christopher Chris Benoit’s insight:

When you go into a job interview, you likely have rehearsed what you’re going to stay to the interviewer about your skills and experience. But then comes the part of the interview when your potential employer offers you the opportunity to ask questions. Many in the hot seat will often reply that they don’t have any, even though their brain is rapid-firing plenty of unanswered questions.

My friends’ weddings are putting me deep in debt

Christopher Chris Benoit’s insight:

Wedding season is here. And for the estimated 69 million Americans who will be attending weddings this year, it means shelling out hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Between travel, gifts, attire and other costs, guests are expected to spend an average of $539 per wedding this year — up more than 50% from last year’s average expected expense of $339, according to the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker’s recent survey of about 1,500 adults.

And with roughly a quarter of couples planning “destination” weddings, according to TheKnot.com, wedding travel often comes with a major price tag.

Answer by Srini Kasturi:

Anyone who is approaching this question as a moral one has no clue about begging in India. Especially anyone who thinks beggars aren’t hard working is patently wrong and ignorant. Begging is a profession with a career just like any other.

Begging is usually an organised industry with begging spots territorially marked across gangs. Have you never wondered why all beggars don’t crowd to the same lucrative high traffic begging spots?

Because begging spots are bid and paid for.

Try this: Become a beggar for a day and find yourself a begging spot. The moment you start, you will be accosted by any number of people, from other beggars to the local mafia to the police, all of whom have an interest in the begging industry that you are trying to enter. You will soon find yourself sucked into a large corporation, put on a commission while the rest of your takings are paid into the organisation. You will start on a low yield begging spot for you to prove yourself and you will work your way up to a better yielding spot.
You might need to do more than just great begging to get a better spot. Because better spots have more uses than just begging, as I explain later.
Why do you think you see the “regulars” in the same spots everyday? That’s because beggars have invested into the location and they will defend it from new entrants. It is a bit like the cop paying his bosses to get deployed at the busier traffic junction where he can make more in bribes from minor traffic offences. Or the more commonly known bribes paid up the organisation in public sector jobs to get into positions with greater corruption income potential.

Beggars are paying someone for the continued privilege of begging there, or they are part of a larger mafia run organisation who own the spot, and pay the police to keep it theirs. The police get their share so they don’t bother the beggars anymore. That’s why the police and the beggars coexist at every major traffic junction in a large city in India.

Beggars appeal to your emotional weakness and pity, and are pretty much everywhere around you. These two characteristics make them the perfect cover for organised crime. Want drugs? Guns? Take out a contact on someone? Deal in stolen goods? Beggars are the front office for the mafia that can do all this for you - they’ll do the initial screening, and channel you to the right people if you seem like the right kind of customer.

You won’t, for a moment, imagine that those big innocent eyes of the five year old begging at the traffic signal have already seen the underworld that you only read about and watch in films. And that hot dusty traffic junction where he works for that underworld. That’s his office from where he collects alms, gathers street info and watches the other interests of the mafia, such as how the shops around are doing so their protection money levels can be revised appropriately. He’s probably already training younger toddlers to be more effective beggars.

Those injuries you see on the beggars, like an amputation, blindness or even tumours? They are inflicted. That woman with a newborn hanging from her breast? That’s not her newborn. It is likely stolen, or the result of a prostitution related pregnancy.

We are talking about the most exploited section of society here. And they are exploited because their terrible condition evokes pity, making you part with your change. And your change is the payoff for the exploiters. That, and all the associated business that I’ve described already.

When you give alms, you are helping organised crime. Stop!

Slumdog Millionaire. It wasn’t just a movie. Think about the blind kid and the passing shot of the little girl with the amputation. And think about Jamal’s brother’s career in crime.
